Queenstown jet boat: Shotover River rides compared

A Queenstown jet boat ride can start in Arthurs Point, central town or with a guided canyon drive. Compare the three routes before choosing the boat time and transfer option.

  • Jet boat routes and meeting points explained
  • Rafting and swing conditions by activity
  • Skippers Canyon access and tour options

Match a Queenstown jet boat ride to the river section

A Queenstown jet boat outing can mean close canyon walls at Arthurs Point, the upper Shotover in Skippers Canyon or a two-river route starting at Main Town Pier. A Shotover River jet boat search therefore covers several distinct journeys. The river rises in the Richardson Mountains, passes through schist valleys and broadens below Arthurs Point before joining the Kawarau. The setting changes along with the departure arrangements.

Compare time on the water separately from the whole excursion. The Arthurs Point ride includes 25 minutes boating, the listed upper Shotover package includes 30 minutes boating within a three-hour outing, and the Main Town Pier ride includes 60 minutes boating. Travel to the start, safety procedures and check-in need their own space in the itinerary. The activity comparison helps if rafting or a land excursion is also under consideration.

Arthurs Point canyons and the transfer option

The Arthurs Point experience includes a professional driver with commentary on local history, geology and Māori culture, plus a safety briefing and life jackets. Heated handrails are included during winter. Parking and locker facilities are also included, while photos and videos are separate purchases subject to availability. Choose this route for the canyon ride close to the river base.

The base is at 3 Arthurs Point Road near the Edith Cavell Bridge. Arrive 30 minutes before departure when checking in at the base. For selected departures, the town shuttle uses the Station Building at 25 Shotover Street, with check-in 45 minutes before departure. Queenstown return transport in this jet boat offer requires the transfer option. The published planning allowance is about one hour with self-arrival or one hour 45 minutes with the shuttle.

Children on this specific Arthurs Point ride must meet the minimum height of 1 metre, increasing to 1.20 metres in certain river conditions. Children up to age 10 must ride with a paying adult aged at least 16. A life jacket must fit. Pregnancy is not recommended, and back, neck or other health conditions should be discussed before participating. The local guide explains the bridge and river base setting.

Upper Shotover with a guided Skippers Canyon approach

The upper-river package starts at 43 Camp Street in central Queenstown and lists three hours for the excursion. Return town transport, a guided drive into Skippers Canyon and bus-driver commentary form part of it. The jet boat component is 30 minutes on the upper Shotover. Life jackets, spray jackets and winter gloves are included. Meals, drinks and photo or video packages are extra.

This is the option to compare when the overland canyon approach matters as much as the boat. Skippers Road is narrow, winding and unsealed, with steep drops. Confirm the operating route and access for your chosen date; a published excursion is not a present road or bridge access notice. Read the Skippers Road guide for road character and contract restrictions rather than arranging your own canyon drive around the boat booking.

For the upper Shotover operation, pregnancy excludes participation in both the bus and boat, and back injuries require particular attention. Tell the operator about injuries in advance. Eligibility belongs to the specific activity: a child fare category is not permission to participate, and the Arthurs Point conditions should not be applied to a different boat product.

Kawarau and the Main Town Pier departure

The two-river ride starts at Main Town Pier on Marine Parade in Queenstown. This one-hour product includes life vests and a driver-guide. Check in at the pier 15 minutes before the scheduled departure. It suits visitors comparing a waterfront starting point with a separate trip to Arthurs Point, but it covers the Shotover and Kawarau route rather than the upper canyon programme.

The Kawarau River has its own regional activities and landscape. Keep those plans separate from what the two-river boat ticket includes. A route using both rivers describes the boating experience; it does not add Bungy, a wine tasting or a transfer from Queenstown Airport.

Getting to check-in and keeping plans workable

From Queenstown Airport in Frankton, public transport uses route 1 on the airport corridor and route 4 through Queenstown towards Arthurs Point. Follow the meeting point on the booked option, since a river-base arrival and central-town shuttle are different journeys. The transport guide explains the connections without treating bus timetable examples as door-to-door guarantees.

Book the activity around its actual check-in and leave room for changing river conditions. Store loose belongings as instructed, listen to the briefing and raise relevant health concerns before arrival. If part of the group prefers a land-based excursion, the canyon outings provide a different way to plan the day. Choosing separately is more useful than assuming that every activity shares a start or return schedule.

Jet boat questions

Are the 25, 30 and 60 minutes total outing times?

They describe boat components on different routes. The upper Shotover package lists three hours overall, while base check-in and optional transport add time around the Arthurs Point ride.

Is transport from Queenstown included for Arthurs Point?

Return transport is included only when the relevant option is selected. Self-arrival uses the river base; the selected town shuttle has its own meeting point and earlier check-in.

Can I use the same child rules for every ride?

Use the conditions for the booked route. The minimum-height and accompanying-adult rules described here apply to the Arthurs Point operation; child pricing alone does not determine eligibility.
