Shotover River tours: Compare activities and transfers

Routes, starts and duration at a glance

The one-hour Shotover and Kawarau jet boat ride starts at Main Town Pier, Marine Parade. The ride and safety briefing are included, with photos and videos available to purchase separately. It is a useful comparison point if a town departure matters more than an overland canyon approach. The route takes in two rivers rather than reproducing the upper Shotover excursion.

The four-hour rafting trip meets at Morning Star Reserve, 1 Arthurs Point Road. It includes a wetsuit, rafting equipment, the whitewater trip, safety briefing, transport to the river and a hot shower. Professional photography services are listed, but that is not a complimentary photo package. Food, drinks and hotel collection are excluded. Allow time to reach Arthurs Point yourself.

The swing booking takes 2.5 hours and includes a driver-guide, designated meeting-point transfers, safety equipment and briefing. Its central Queenstown shuttle is mandatory. Read the swing guide for harness, health and access requirements, including the steep steps. A shuttle collection point is part of this activity, not a transport service for an independent visit to the gorge.

Canyon history or a guided 4WD film route

The canyon audio excursion combines Skippers Road history, filming locations and photo stops with stories available in eight languages, including English and German. Central Queenstown pickup points, groups of up to 11 and a complimentary coffee or beer or wine form part of the offer. Its included programme lasts 3.5 to 4 hours. Gold panning belongs to other outings, so choose this one for stories and scenery.

The four-hour film landscape excursion starts at 37 Shotover Street. Transport in a six-seater 4WD, a local driver-guide, English commentary, gold panning and refreshments are included. Its Skippers Road section reaches Lighthouse Rock; the gold panning is at the Arrow River. The filming locations page compares these approaches without turning a landscape photograph into a promised film scene.

Skippers Road is narrow, winding and unsealed, with steep drops. Confirm the current operating route and conditions with the provider for canyon outings. Do not plan a bridge crossing or access beyond it simply because a brochure or image shows the structure. For an outing built around photography or a dedicated vehicle, compare the private tours separately. On 22 January 2026, QLDC announced that Skippers Bridge was closed to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. No reopening date was given. Check the current status with QLDC before visiting.

Kawarau combinations and the eBike day

The eight-hour combination joins a Shotover jet boat experience with eBike hire, a Kawarau Zipride and a guided wine tasting. The bike equipment includes a helmet, repair kit and bags, with a trail map and support. Queenstown to Arthurs Point and Gibbston to Queenstown shuttles are part of the day. Lunch is extra; organise it around the activity programme.

The Kawarau Swing and Bungy are available as upgrades, rather than the included Zipride itself. For those regional activities and the wine area, continue to Kawarau River. The tasting here is a component of the eBike combination. Its shuttles connect activity locations and Queenstown, so arrange airport travel separately using the arrival guide.

Leave room for regional days

If Milford Sound is also on the itinerary, treat it as its own regional excursion with separate travel arrangements. Choose a Shotover outing by the time and energy left for that day rather than joining unrelated departure schedules into one tight plan.
